League Guidelines

Learn more about the structure of our board, league roles, and how the league operates.

These are updated annually.

Rules and Regulations

The Fairmount Park Women’s+ Softball League uses the current official slow-pitch softball rules as adopted by the US National Governing Body of Softball: USA Softball (formerly ASA), with a few exceptions to meet our league’s needs. In 2023, the league hosted a zoom Rules Review session with our umpire manager, Anthony Mariani. Click here to view the recording. (Passcode: b$387Bc6)

Fall Ball rules and regulation exceptions make the series more relaxed than our spring season. We allow open substitution across the league to prevent forfeits and give enthusiastic players more on-field time.

Rules and regulations are updated annually, as voted for by coaches/team reps.

Scorekeeping

Our spring season has official scorekeeping which must be uploaded to LeagueOne for the official standings. If a team wishes to have an official scorekeeper who is NOT a player, they will still need to register on LeagueOne - see details on how to submit scores.

 FAQs

  • The board watches the weather closely during the season - we cannot play safely if the field conditions are poor due to rain. We also make safety decisions about excessive heat warnings. At the latest, teams would be made aware 2 hours prior to their games if a game is cancelled, via an email through LeagueOne and through the league’s social media accounts, which we recommend league members check regularly.

  • Courtesy runners are permitted on a limited basis. For all rules, check our Rules and Regulations. If any rule is unclear, discuss it with your coach who can provide feedback to the board for clarification.

  • Absolutely! We don’t expect players to be able to make every game - discuss your availability with our Commissioner who will place you on an appropriate team, and be sure to make your coach aware of your availability. No matter how many games a player attends, the per player registration fee is the same.

  • We expect players to have a softball glove, though even if you do not have one you can discuss with your coach if another player has a spare to loan you. Teams each have their own bases and usually an array of shared bats that other players can utilize. Softballs are provided by the league board.

  • Home teams always bat second. In our spring season, Home teams are responsible for providing the bases, game ball and submitting official scores through LeagueOne.

  • The league operates within the City of Philadelphia’s parks system, and therefore is governed by the Parks and Recreation rules which change regularly according to city mandates.
